An international cenaculum studiorum was held in Bologna, where ample room was devoted to discussion on all the topics of the research conducted by Prof. Zamboni's team and Dr. Salvi and to the full presentation of the research work. The meeting was attended, among others, by all the researchers who at world level have produced substantial data to validate or be associated with the results originally described by the Italian group.

At the UIP World Meeting in Montecarlo, the complex vascular picture associated with chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency (international acronym: CCSVI) was discussed at a round table chaired by Prof. Zamboni. There are 4 main patterns of stenosing malformations in the principal veins draining blood from the brain and the spinal cord; they are affected extracranially and extravertebrally at the level of the azygos and jugular systems. This complex chronic picture produces changes in the haemodynamics and flow dynamics of the brain with the opening of collateral circles. This picture is worryingly associated with the neurologic condition known as Multiple Sclerosis. However, it is not found in any other neurologic disease. In the pictures you can see Paolo Zamboni, BB Lee, Fabrizio Salvi, Roberto Galeotti, Marian Simka and Mark Haacke.
The Congress was followed by a Consensus Conference on Venous Malformations - headed by Prof. BB Lee from Washington - where experts from 47 countries unanimously voted in favour of officially including the stenosing lesions found in CCSVI in the new Consensus document and Guidelines on account of the submitted angiographic evidence and scientific documentation. This document will soon be published in International Angiology.
